Jack Chick—Revealed?

Is the man on the left the notoriously reclusive and camera-shy Jack Chick, captured on film for the first time in decades? I do not know. Context (and major credit for finding this) here.

(Via Maud Newton.)

UPDATE: Eric Reynolds in the comments inspired me to search out Chick’s high-school yearbook photo for comparison’s sake. Here it is, courtesy of the Jack T. Chick Museum of Fine Art. Eric’s right: it’s definitely possible.

UPDATE II: Don’t forget to check out Eric’s further researches in the comments. We have confirmation on the wood paneling!

I’ve seen Chick’s high school graduation pic and that definitely could be him…

I dug through my files and also have a 1948 photo that LA Magazine ran in its May 2003 issue, in a feature by Robert Ito, as well as a purported 1978 pic from some kind of Christian goods convention. Looking at both, I’m actually quite certain that is Chick (I wasn’t at all when I first looked at it — his exuberance seemed completely out of character). I’ve forwarded a link to this story to Ito, who has actually seen Chick in person.

Okay, looking into this more, the photo is even consistent with this amateur comic from the 1980s:

Despite the conspiracies of cardboard cut-outs over at the source site, I’m actually now pretty confident that this is Chick and if so it’s maybe the first pic of him to go public that I know of it about 60 years (the 1978 pic I have is unauthorized). I’m curious to hear from my friend Robert. Very exciting! He looks more like an artist you’d expect to be drawing MAD. Dan Raeburn would have thoughts on all of this.

looks like james caviezel in that small pic.

  5. Eric Reynolds says:

My pal Robert Ito thinks it’s probably Chick as well. Can’t be certain, but is certain that the background
is the Chick offices’ waiting room in rancho
cucamonga… As he said, “i’d know that door and ugly wood paneling anywhere.”

Wow! This is a huge find!

    You are awesome, Eric.

No, just the only nerd who could possibly care!

I met Chick a couple times and am 100% certain it’s him. Here’s more: http://scoobiedavis.blogspot.com/2006/10/jack-t.html
