That’s right, you heard me. Bloodied and battered we rise up with Castle to lead us! Frank Santoro and Ben Jones have unleashed a brand new issue — 48 pages, full color — called Cold Heat 5/6. Just 100 copies were made, and it’s only available online. So don’t dilly dally — get on with it! Frank has some fine words about the issue on his blog, as well as incredible original art for sale done with Jim Rugg. And you buy the issue itself at PictureBox!

You gotta soda on your roof!

  4. sean r. says:

I’ll gladly pay $20 for this thing, but 17 bones for shipping to Canada????????? don’t mean to gripe, but yeesh…

  5. Dan Nadel says:

We’re working cheaper int’l shipping methods. Check back soon.

  6. Kioskerman says:

I totally support the cheaper int´l shipping methods. Want to get my hands on this issue.

  7. chan says:

In Michigan, we say “pop”. Except at the Chinese restaurant I went to tonight. Their menu said “soft soda”.

But the real reason I called was to ask if the remaining issues will also be released in 48 pagers? Is there still going to be a collection of all 10 issues? I’m confused.

Also, I think Dick Cheney was sitting behind me at Watchmen last night. He looks terrible.

  8. Ryan Cecil says:

Uh, yeah, and 23 bucks to ship to Japan sucks real deep. I want to buy one but please, uh, make it better!

  9. Dan Nadel says:

yah, trying, but waiting on our programmer. sit tight.

  10. Frank Santoro says:

Chan, read the Cold Heat blog, please.

    yayeah! rawk!

  12. Frank Santoro says:

oh yah, don’t forget to check out the new MOME. Jon Vermilyea kicks all our asses with a new Cold Heat strip.

  13. Jon Vermilyea says:

That’s right Frank, I kicked your ass! Hide your asses, for no ass is safe from Jon Vermilyea.

  14. Ray Sohn says:

what’s with all this ass kicking?

  15. Frank Santoro says:

We’re trying to pick an internet fight with the MOME people.

  16. Anonymous says:

I was expecting something more like the Invisibles, drawn by Paul Pope with acid green and pink dayglow coloring.

  17. Frank Santoro says:

    oh, you didn’t hear?

    Grant Morrison and Paul Pope
have signed with Picturebox to do
    COLD HEAT 2: ELECTRIC BUGALOO

  18. Eric Reynolds says:

Readers, please note that the aforementioned Cold Heat “5/6” is unauthorized fan-fic, buyer beware. Fantagraphics obtained the rights to “Cold Heat” from Santoro and Picturebox as part of our widely-publicized Fall ’08 trade for Jon Vermilyea (part of a recession-driven Picturebox salary dump in which we essentially sent several expiring contracts — Filibusting Comics, Fission Chicken, Jeremy Pickle Goes to Prague, etc. — in exchange for Vermilyea’s long-term deal).

If you have any concern whether a “Cold Heat” story you might be tempted to read is the real deal, look for the “MOME” Seal of Quality on the cover. If none appears, buy at your own risk, as Fantagraphics assumes no responsibility for the quality of these unauthorized, bootlegged editions.

Look for Barry Windsor-Smith’s GIANT-SIZE COLD HEAT this summer from Fantagraphics Books.

Hey, this is off topic. BUT, I'm heading to Tokyo soon and I'm curious to know if anyone knows of any good alt-comic shops there.

Specifically, I'm looking for books by artists like King Terry, Takashi Nemoto, Yamantaka Eye & Suiho Tagawa.

This would be a great help! Thanks!

  20. Frank Santoro says:

Dan’s in LA doing an “Overspray” event. But Dan might know… Dan?

Now, please buy a Cold Heat 5/6, if you haven’t already, Matt

  21. Bill Randall says:

Frank, this book is amazing. I’ll have a review up in a day. Obviously I’m not writing it now because I’m here answering Matt’s question even though I don’t know him, it’s 2:47 and, as you have established, I am insane.

Matt, go to any large bookstore and they’ll have tons of the stuff you want. Or go to Mandarake in Shibuya, Beam building 2F. Also, Village Vanguage, a kind of subculture boutique, has a store in Shinjuku’s Lumine2 shopping center, 4F. They also have a Shimokitazawa store; if you have a Japanese friend there, just give them this.

And there’s a fantastic little basement bookstore/gallery where I found New Engineering in French somewhere behind Ando Tado’s Omotesando Hills oh you will look at modernist architecture yes you will

    bed

  22. Frank Santoro says:

    thanks B,

we should start a message board.

    wait, no, that is insanity.

  23. Turok Reader says:

I think that`s On Sundays at the Watarium you are talking about regarding the basement bookstore. The owner speaks English if he`s in. Ask for Jon Chandler comics while you are there 😉

Have a trawl around Nakano Broadway too. There`s a great shop in there but it`s such a maze it would be impossible to explain. Just look it up.

Village vanguard are good and stock some amazing stuff but have barely any display copies.

Try Aoyama Book Center as well, they are more generous with display copies.

Shibuya Publishing in Shibuya is worth checking out too, it`s a nice store.

There`s lots of little stores about the place with second hand stuff and it`s worth popping in when you notice them to have a shifty.

  24. Turok Reader says:

forgot to say Nakano Broadway has several Mandarake stores too.

  25. Bill Randall says:

Turok Reader, the place I'm thinking of is just a random bookshop, not the Watari-um, though you're totally right about On Sundays there. I went & saw the Taylor McKimens/Misaki Kawai show, as well as a bunch of Paper Rad originals. Had a coffee and felt like I owned the place.

  26. MrColinP says:

    MESSAGE BOARD PLEASE

  27. Anonymous says:

Is there going to be a new Cold Heat Special soon?

  28. Frank Santoro says:

    in theory, yah.

I don’t wanna say who it is yet.

Lane Milburne is doing a new one for MoCCA.

And Chris Cornwell is almost done with his new one as well.

  29. matt says:

THANK YOU ALL VERY MUCH! Great recs for japan.

  30. Turok Reader says:

Bill, I went to that exhibition too.
Actually I embarrassingly quickly read a link a pal sent me and went to the store on the right date of the year – in the wrong year. Still, it was a nice way to meet the owner. That was funny too because my friend was translating for a couple of minutes before teh owner, Kusano-san, turned to me and started speaking English.

  31. Ryan Cecil says:

If Matt is still paying attention to this thread, there’s a joint called LILMAG in Tokyo.

  32. Ryan Cecil says:

totally posted without thinking, i think that’s just a distro
