John Pham - handmade edition

When I was in L.A. I got to hang out with John Pham and Jon Vermilyea. Me and Regé drove with them to the beach. We got there right before sunset. Then we walked up to the Santa Monica Pier. Skeeball and funnel cakes!

It was nice to see John Pham in his element. I’ve usually hung out with him in the cold of winter & that seems all wrong for him. He’s from L.A. so he looked relaxed and right at home.

But somehow he had never been to the Santa Monica Pier. So he was happy to indulge the tourist in me. The four of us hung out in the arcade for a bit. Highlights included Pham on one of those dance machine stomp video games – and also me and Regé playing two player on the Terminator game. We both had laser rifles. (more…)

Hey y’all! Ramblin’ Frank Santoro here with a Comics Comics news report of sorts. Mr. Dash Shaw and I recently traveled to San Franciskie for the Alternative Press Expo. The “Nose Gang” was in full effect. It was a pretty good show for the most part. No complaints, no drama. Some interesting panels; lots of interesting people. I’ll be posting a full report later in the week but just wanted to say hey.

Also, I haven’t seen this linked to so I thought I’d post it here. Mr. Sean T. Collins has conducted an interview with Brian Chippenedale. Pretty great.

P.S. Best portrait of Jon Vermilyea ever.

Well, while PB is waiting to be bought by Disney and/or be given the rights to half of Mole Man we will be exhibiting this weekend, September 26-27, at SPX. Booth D9-11.

We will have our full range of titles and Frank Santoro and Matthew Thurber will be in attendance. Besides our newest books, including Santoro’s Cold Heat 7/8, Thurber’s 1-800 MICE 3, Mat Brinkman’s Multiforce and Gary Panter’s Pee Dog 2, we will have a stack of the phenomenal new Bart Simpson’s Treehouse of Horror (now on sale in our shop!), featuring stories by Ben Jones, Jon Vermilyea, Thurber, Kevin Huizenga and many others. We will also have a selection of new mini-comics, zines, and the legendary comic book series Real Deal.

And, bonus: There will be a Treehouse of Horror signing with various artists on Sunday, 9/25, from noon to 1 pm.

I am popping up from vacations and research trips to note a few developments related to CC friends.

Comics Comics and PictureBox pal Jon Vermilyea is opening his first solo exhibition next week at Secret Headquarters in L.A. Looks awesome. Go give Jon a noogie for us!

and:

I beam with pride now that Brian Chippendale has started his own, fiercely competitive comics blog. Brian is our enemy now. Next thing you know Leif Goldberg will have blog. Oh wait, he does!

Ok, going away again. See ya in September!

San Diego

Post Comment
And here’s a brief bit from San Diego. I made it home in one piece, a bit worse for wear. Friends Eric Reynolds and Tom Devlin did their best to council me with sage-like wisdom but Comicon beat me bloody. The best part was really just hanging out with friends…. Anyhow, here are some images.

Tom tries to be funny. Weissman and Ryan oblige.

Special sidewise image! I accepted Ogden Whitney’s Hall of Fame
award at the Eisner Award ceremony. And they let me keep it! Haw!
As Johnny Ryan said, “what does it mean if the inductee is a better
cartoonist than the guy who the award is named for?” Good question,
Johnny! The Eisner Awards remain the best reason not to take comics
seriously as an art form (well, that and the Masters of American Comics
exhibition!). Tom looks at it enviously after a furious night of losing to
Gumby, Sandman (I lost to Sandman, too!) and other stuff waaaaaay better
than the Moomins and Tatsumi. Oh yes.

Matthew Thurber, Marc Bell and Jon Vermilyea go Bats.
