Weather conditions are delaying today’s post, but something will be up later. In the meantime, check out photos from Frank’s show.

Tonight in sunny Los Angeles our own Frank Santoro is opening an exhibition of new drawings. Go see him (yes, he’ll be there!) and be sure to ask him about Scorpio Rose. That works every time. I got to see a bunch of the work in progress when I was in Pittsburgh last September and this stuff really is stunning. You’re in for a real treat. I posted a preview over on PBox, and here’s the info:

Hello and welcome to ComicsComics weekend edition. This week I am presenting a slew of interviews I conducted with a plethora of cartoonists who exhibited at this year’s Pittsburgh Indy Comics Expo. Some of the names may be well known to you while others may be appearing on your radar for the first time. I had a lot of fun doing these interviews. It felt very old world fandom or something. Thanks to everyone who participated for putting up with my antics. And if I missed you this year, look for me next year.
The marquee interview of the show – Kevin Huizenga and Jim Rugg – is archived here at Inkstuds. All other interviews are presented after the jump. Check it out! (more…)
I was interviewed by Sean T. Collins over at Marvel.com about my Silver Surfer story for the Strange Tales II series. Check it out!
PictureBox will be in two places at once this weekend: SPX in Bethesda, MD and the Brooklyn Book Festival in NYC!
First: We will be at SPX in Bethesda, MD, tables G5-G8. Frank will of course be occupying one table, foisting his epic back issue selection on you, the unsuspecting yet increasingly discerning consumer!
There will be many wonderful things at PBox for you to blow your cash on:
-We will be hosting Brian Ralph and Paul Lyons as they launch the new issue of Monster, featuring work by Brinkman, Chippendale, CF, Drain, Goldberg, and many others.
-Advance copies of Renee French’s H Day and Julie Doucet and Michel Gondry’s My New New York Diary for sale!
–Karl Wirsum: Drawings 1967-70 – A deluxe oversize new catalog from the master accompanying the exhibition I curated at Derek Eller Gallery, NYC.
–Garo Manga: The First Decade – Ryan Holmberg’s essential history
-A new zine by Matthew Thurber and Billy Grant
-Yuichi Yokoyama’s BABYBOOMFINAL – Yokoyama’s insane art/comics heavyweight tome
-Our full line of vintage Brazilian porn
-Deep and dark publications from the Paris house United Dead Artists, including Permagel by Charles Burns
-And because no one except Jason Miles asked for it: Complete runs of the early 1980s classic: New York City Outlaws!
-We will also have one, that’s right, ONE, copy of If ‘n Oof for you to ogle and be amazed by.
If that wasn’t enough, we will be at the Brooklyn Book Festival on Sunday, with all of the above, and more! Come see us in Suburban D.C. or downtown Brooklyn.
There’s a new website for the animated movie I’m doing. Ray Sohn designed it. It’s a shared production blog. Expect to see: storyboards, character model sheets, production drawings, background paintings, frames, animatics, color separations, some writing, original cartoons for the site, videos we like by other people, and I’m posting a drawing from my sketchbook every weekday on it. Check it out and you will get the idea.
Michael DeForge, Brandon Graham and our own Frank Santoro do some fun comic shop talk with Robin McConnell on the latest Inkstuds podcast. Consider this a CC-approved way to procrastinate from whatever life is imposing on you right now.
A couple things to bring to your attention:
1) Sir Gary Panter, recently knighted by the United Schwingdom, has relaunched his web site, and his holding a special contest to celebrate. He is also having a show in L.A. with Bob “50 years of genius work” Zoell and Devin “Lady Pants” Flynn.
2) Over on his “personal” blog, Frank revals that after some 150 years in the comics biz, he’s finally sold out. Thanks heavens. Now come stand over here, Frank.
3) Yuichi Yokoyama recently had an exhibition of new and recent work in Tokyo. Some tantalizing images here.
That’s it. Now go about your morning.
“The Ruined Cast” / Dash Shaw – demo teaser from Howard Gertler on Vimeo.
Hey everybody, Frank Santoro here to update you the “not comics” project I’m working on: Dash Shaw’s new animated feature, The Ruined Cast.
We’ve made a three minute teaser and are presenting it here for your viewing pleasure. Check it out! And yes, I hand painted those waves rolling in from the ocean!
