Davis of the North

A fine greeting

Just last night keen-eyed CC reader Seth G. of Guelph, Ontario sent along some fine images by Jack Davis. Seth explains that they were published in Canada’s Weekend Magazine in 1959 to accompany an article on the legend of Big Foot. Can we pause for a moment here and marvel at this period of Jack Davis’s work? This is just after Humbug and he’s at the peak of his tightly drawn, highly detailed pen work. Look at that cabin! An incidental detail brought fully to cartoon life. It makes sense that this same artist would be able to capture gestures so perfectly in his later, more slapstick stuff on movie posters and in illustration. But this work is ever more delightful in its craft and restraint.

Unsuspecting… ?

Trouble!

Gorgeous. I agree with you, Dan, the restraint with just-enough-exaggeration makes this superb Davis.

Where are the Davis books in this comics golden age?

  2. Ed Piskor says:

I love Jack Davis’s illustration stuff, and to know that he probably banged this out in an hour or two tops makes it all the more humbling.

Man, has this guy ever turned out something that wasn’t beautiful? (Don’t answer that if he has.)
