I went to the Omega the Unknown event at Rocketship last week to see co-creators Jonathan Lethem, Farel Dalrymple, Paul Hornschemeier, Karl Rusnak, and Gary Panter talk about the series. I was feeling a little under the weather, and the store was packed, so I didn’t stay long, but I did get a chance to briefly ask Lethem about the whole Rusnak/Kansur thing I pointed out a million internet years ago, and then expanded on a few thousand years later. Suffice it to say I didn’t get a very mind-blowing answer — if I recall correctly, Lethem called it “pretty obvious, huh?” and then went on to say that “Kansur” was Rusnak’s old graffiti tag, and that, sort of like how Charlie Brown always wanted to be called “Flash”, Rusnak used to wish his first name was “Rex”. Anyway, as this doesn’t exactly provide evidence for my “grand theories” (though it doesn’t necessarily contradict them!), I probably shouldn’t mention it, but due to my irreproachable personal honor code, I felt compelled to publicize it here. (That link is like my favorite political commercial of all time, by the way.)

Meanwhile, in the new issue of Omega The Unknown, with Gary Panter art, there is no credit to be found, for anyone, within its pages.
(that’s tangential, but I felt worth noting.)
And you didn’t ask Letham what his old tag was? I know for a fact he wrote! OK… maybe not a fact. But I’m pretty sure. His brother definitely did!
Brian , you’re right! There are no credits at all for the new Omega as far as I can tell. That sucks. Gary Panter doesn’t even get a nod of thanks?
That is really weird, Brian. I’m sure he’ll get credit in the eventual trade collection, but still.
And sorry, Marc. I should’ve asked Lethem that, but it didn’t occur to me. Maybe it’s on Google somewhere.
Marvel has a whole interview with Panter, here. My two cents about the odd things in it here
I tried to google the tag. No luck, but there was this cool tidbit: The tattoo on novelist Jonathan Lethem’s upper left arm is about 3 inches long. It depicts a spray-can shooting a fan of reddish-pink paint. Lethem’s spray-can tattoo, which features a stack of big block letters that spell UBIK.
Thanks, Marc. UBIK is a great book.
The last couple weeks I was really missing the ComicsComics posts as they became sparse and then I saw these comments and realized I have no business being here. I’m not nearly as literary/street as I thought I was…
That’s right, Jacob, you don’t belong here. I’m glad you finally got the message. And don’t bother coming back until you’ve gotten a tattoo related to your favorite author! If you even have one, which I know is assuming a lot.
Illiterate wuss.
I stumbled on this photo of Lethem’s brother painting:

Cool. Thanks, Alex.
And Jacob, I just re-read my comment to you, and it looks a lot more harsh now than it did in my head when I wrote it. I hope you know that I don’t really think you’re illiterate or a wuss. I was just joking around. Sorry if it was misunderstood. (I almost wrote sorry if I made you cry, until I realized that doesn’t really help much. I do need help.)
hey Jacob
that Miller Spirit poster does suck, doesn’t it?
