It’s a rainy Sunday morning here in Fumetto. The Kirby show is up, three floors and around 150 pages later. Here are some photos from the weekend thus far. I should note that not shown here are the superlative 1940s and ’50s pages we have on display, including the cover to Boy Commandos 23, unpublished Black Magic and Foxhole covers, the entire “City of Ghouls” from Fighting American 2, and more. I’ve so enjoyed walking through Kirby’s career, watching his visual world change and expand. Paul and I have also been lucky enough to be joined by two of our lenders, Tom Morehouse and Tom Kraft, as well as Rand Hoppe of The Jack Kirby Museum. Just having spitballing history and theory with these guys has been an incredible education. Now I need to see the rest of the festival.
The third floor: Omac, 2001, the complete Losers story (plus some pencils) from Our Fighting Forces 156, a Soul Love story, and, yes, more.
Ben says "are you kidding me?" when confronted with all but two pages of Fantastic Four 54. We filled a room with it.
Fumetto: They mean business. Kirby on the city buses.
Kirby collector and show lender Tom Kraft, Kirby Museum man Rand Hoppe and Ben Jones take in the Marvel room on the second floor. Highlights here include splash pages from Sgt. Fury #3, X-Men #16, and Fantastic Four Annual 2. Some gorgeous Thor material, as well as A key page from Avengers #3.
The complete Kamandi #6 -- a highlight of 1970s Kirby. Rigorous details and a riotous combination of sex, bikes, suspense and landscapes.
Here's a partial view of the Ben Jones show at The Kunsthalle, a rather large industrial space, Jonesy made a cardboard monolith, a tangle of ladders, and some damn fine paintings. Not shown: A mildly pornographic mural, some stripes, and a video. The whole this is a refreshing change of pace.

Did you give a talk? Didn’t I read that you were doing a talk?
Dan i read about that horrible puking/shitting incident you had that caused you miss your talk! Sounds horrible. you know, those Fumetto prostitutes may talk a good Kirby, but when it gets down to business you really need to protect yourself! Especially if you prefer the meat dishes.
The Kirby bus!? Amazing!
I’m sure Dan will be doing his own report, but Paul Gravett had this to say about the show:
