Dear Mr. Crane…

Jeet kindly forwarded me two letters from Pat Boyette to Roy Crane, which he came across while researching his texts for Fantagraphics’ upcoming Crane books. It sounds like these essays will do for Crane what our man Heer has already done for Frank King: completely open up a new way of thinking about his life and work. I can’t wait. Anyhow, as part of my continued and shameless shilling for Art in Time, here are the two letters. Love the humor here and Boyette’s unabashed fandom. Don’t forget to come see Frank and I at MoCCA this weekend in NYC. The password is: “Charlton.”

    Don,

I loved your appreciation of Pat Boyette on Comicartville. Thanks for writing in. Do you know much about his ideas behind Cosmic Book? It’s become one of my all-time favorite one-off anthologies. What a fascinating life he had!

  3. hi Dan,
It’s simply amazing to run across these missives by Pat! I spent much time and many years visiting with him at his home across town since i was 15 years old in 1971. Pat spoke much about Crane and Wash Tubbs and Captain Easy! I even used to watch him anchor the local San Antonio news broadcast in the early 1960s! I lost touch with him when he moved to Fort Worth area but not before I was able to get his inking assist on my Indiana Jones, Star Wars and Dreadstar assignments for Marvel! I was happy to get his help since, in the 1970s, he had let me ink some Phantom panels and even a War text story! Pat was such a Huge influence/inspiration on me that I named one of my sons after his middle name, Aaron! To this day I am unsure whether Patrick Aaron Boyette is his real name or just what he happened to sign a newspaper style comic strip he was developing in the 1970s! lol
    Warm regards,
    Sam de la Rosa /.
