Exhuming McCarthy

Speaking of Brendan McCarthy, he’s got some original art up for sale right now on Artdroids, including a bunch of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles stuff. I assume Jacob Covey will be all over this.

If I still have this song in my head in a week…
hahaahahaaaaaaaa
just had a few beers with my Dad and come home to see this… hahaaaa nice one T!
McCarthy took the Bat Boy DC pitch down from his blog. Whoops, I guess all the linking and press bout it got it squashed!
“His” blog, he has some lackey do it, no? This is really a case study in squandered talent now (nothing against the Turtles). I could cry. Brendan, you could do so much more! Waaaahh!
alright, no more razzing Brendan.
He’s gonna say “no” to an interview.
But, like Mike Wallace, I’ll ask the “tough” questions…
Just for the record, I wasn’t trying to razz anybody (well, maybe Jacob, but only a very little — and he’s the King Razzman himself, so I doubt he’s offended).
Personally, I was never a Turtles fan (my very sophisticated younger self left it to my little brothers), but if I was, I’d buy one of those drawings for sure.
Good call, Tim! Damn those are great. Look at the soul in his work. So good.
And even though I wouldn’t have liked this sporty version of the turtles it’s a smart “redesign” of the characters.
Issue 10 of the TMNT is why I love the turtles in case you guys want to do a cage match. FYI.
Hey Jacob, I have three boxes of kids drawing of the turtles that were entries in some contest back in the late 80s – early 90s that I’ll gladly send you if you cover postage. They were callously entered into either the Tundra or Mirage database and tossed in a dumpster and I felt obliged to rescue them.
Found a recent (2005) interview with McCarthy on the 200AD site.
Are there clues?
Still reading through that 2000AD interview, but one quote that strikes me (and I’ve thought about the same since at least the Whitney Biennial in 2002 that had Chris Ware and Forcefield in it)
“What’s interesting to me is that people like Daniel Clowes and Jim Woodring, all those guys, are now almost becoming mainstream. That whole left field stuff is almost becoming the bigger market and the superhero comics are actually becoming more ghettoised into the direct market, only on sale in comic shops.”
Well, ‘duh’, really.
I looked up very confused a couple months ago with a confused puppy dog look when my old assistant (he left to draw Darkman, of all things) said, “well, you’re not really into mainstream comics.” meaning stuff like the X-Men and whatnot, and I’m left thinking, does anyone really actually think of those things as mainstream now?
