These were comic books that were published in Spain. At the time, they were sort of the equivalent of the underground comics in the Sixties in America. They were very anarchic, very against the system, against the establishment, and a lot of them dealt with the situation of postwar Spain. There was one in particular that influenced <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">The Devil&#8217;s Backbone<\/span> more than <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Pan&#8217;s Labyrinth<\/span> that dealt with an orphanage in postwar Spain; that was called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.carlosgimenez.com\/obra\/paracuellos.htm\">Paracuellos<\/a> [by <a href=\"http:\/\/lambiek.net\/artists\/g\/gimenez_carlos.htm\">Carlos Gim\u00e9nez<\/a>, 1981].<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div style=\"text-align: right;\">\u2014<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Guillermo_del_Toro\">Guillermo del Toro<\/a>, in an interview from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.austinchronicle.com\/gyrobase\/Issue\/story?oid=oid%3A435204\">Austin Chronicle<\/a><\/div>\n<p>This one is too easy, I know, but this <a href=\"http:\/\/comicscomicsmag.blogspot.com\/2006\/12\/comics-enriched-their-lives-1.html\">series<\/a> needs to live on as more than just a cheap ploy to lure unsuspecting readers from a barely related (at best) <a href=\"http:\/\/joelschlosberg.blogspot.com\/2006\/12\/carl-sagan-blog-thon-meta-post.html\">&#8220;blog-a-thon&#8221;<\/a>\u2014if only so I can sleep at night.
