{"id":467,"date":"2009-04-17T13:07:00","date_gmt":"2009-04-17T18:07:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/comicscomicsmag.com\/2009\/04\/incomplete\/"},"modified":"2009-04-17T13:07:00","modified_gmt":"2009-04-17T18:07:00","slug":"incomplete","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/comicscomicsmag.com\/?p=467","title":{"rendered":"Incomplete"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I do not have the proper mindset for decent comics bloggery this week, but I still thought I&#8217;d quickly post a link to <a href=\"http:\/\/2chan.us\/wordpress\/2009\/04\/13\/japanese-lectureblog-post-translation-the-space-between-anime-and-manga-4-why-is-the-manga-version-of-%E2%80%9Cnausicaa%E2%80%9D-so-hard-to-read-by-takekuma-kentaro\/\">this fascinating essay<\/a> by Kentaro Takekuma (co-creator of one of my favorite books of comics meta-criticism, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.powells.com\/partner\/30974\/biblio\/9781569318638 \">Even a Monkey Can Draw Manga<\/a>) writing on <a href=\"http:\/\/tezukainenglish.com\/\">Osamu Tezuka<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ghibli.jp\/\">Hayao Miyazaki<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>One of the most interesting parts of this essay, I think, is where Kentaro describes why he feels that Miyazaki&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.powells.com\/partner\/30974\/biblio\/9781591164081  \">Nausica\u00e4<\/a> manga series is &#8220;hard to read&#8221;, including this bit:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The individual panels are too \u201ccomplete\u201d as illustrations. This is only true for each singular frame (panel), and there isn\u2019t enough of an attempt to connect one frame to the next, or to guide the reader in following the flow of the manga.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This probably has something to do with why people so often describe <span style=\"font-style:italic;\">Nausica\u00e4<\/span> as aesthetically &#8220;Western&#8221;. The whole thing is worth reading, especially for Miyazaki or Tezuka fans. <\/p>\n<p>Oh, and for the record, I personally didn&#8217;t find <span style=\"font-style:italic;\">Nausica\u00e4<\/span> hard to read at all.<\/p>\n<p>[H\/t to <a href=\"http:\/\/joglikescomics.blogspot.com\">J.O.G. And while I was writing this, <a href=\"http:\/\/comics212.net\/2009\/04\/17\/go-read-why-nausicaa-is-hard-to-read\/\">Chris Butcher<\/a> linked to it, so this meager post is even more superfluous now.
