Dark Horse announced they'll be reprinting the Tubby comic (in the same format as their Little Lulu series). Their first volume will reprint issues 1 to 6.

@Jeffrey Meyer. Right, "Howard Cruse" not "Harold Cruse" (I was confusing the cartoonist with the distinguished author of The Crisis of The Negro Intellectual). I've corrected Cruse's name.

Weissman belongs on the list. He did an interesting reworking of one of Stanley's horror stories.

The reason I'm not sure about Barry is that I know the others like to read old comics, but I'm not so sure about Barry. I really don't know how much of Stanley's work Barry has read. I'd love to find out.

I'm not sure I understand parts of this paragraph:

"Progeny. Who are Stanley’s artistic heirs? Crumb. Seth. Carol Tyler. Justin Green. Lynn Johnston. Harold Cruse. Jaime Hernandez. Gilbert Hernandez. Kevin Huizenga. Maybe Lynda Barry – I’m not absolutely sure. She’s too young to have read Stanley’s Lulu but maybe she read some of his 1960s work."

Who is "Harold Cruse"? Did you mean "Howard"?

How is Lynda Barry "too young" compared to most of the other artists you mention, many of whome areactually years or decades younger? Steven Weissman (though I can't stand his work) might be added to the list of Stanley's heirs as well.

@Frank Young. The years you list as "peak" add up to 17 years. Stanley only worked in comics for 28 years. To say that 17 out of 28 years were week is to say that he maintained a consistently high standard for a long time.

@Chris Mautner. Fair enough, but not universally true. Little Orphan Annie met many kind dads and threatening mother figures (like Mrs. Bleating-Hart). Or look at Gasoline Alley and the difference between Uncle Walt (the adopted dad of Skeezix) and his natural mother (Madame Octave).

@Austin English. Slowly I turned, step by step, inch by inch...

re: "Ma and Dad." That's not something that's particular to Stanley. A good deal of children's literature, TV shows and movies usually have the mother in the saintly, can do no wrong role, and the dad either painted as a goofball or a threat.

I just thought they had a Tubby story in their FCBD comic, not as a preview of an upcoming project. I hope the covers are included like they are in Dark Horse ones.

i like the d and q stanley stuff fine, by the way. so great those comics are in print. and im sure the 'why is seth art on the cover??' argument is long dead.
i just dont see why the DK effort for lulu hasnt gotten greater respect or has to be viewed as inherently inferior. honestly, i wish more reprint projects followed that model.
